Self-initiated Study

Started a self-initiated study group with some of the third years and the second years. First meeting was a bit of a meet-and-greet, so we decided our first piece of homework would be something simple. Decided on squash and stretch as it's one of the simplest animation principles.
The first animation does not use motion guides, hence the sort of bobbing effect of the ball. The second animation does use motion guides and ultimately feels a lot smoother. I think it's too fast but that's not too big of a deal, i think.

Indian ink + a very nice twig that my classmate Joshua Lord picked out for me. He's a good man.
We had Martin in today as our model, who is always very nice to have as he always takes photos of the work when he is done. His enthusiasm is endearing and he resembles a Greek philosopher when his beard is grown out and that's pretty cool if you ask me.
Basic rotated pose, just done in indian ink with a twig! Pretty cool. Love the way indian ink dries, quink ink just doesn't dry in the same way I dunno. Feels wild. Ooh. Living it up.

Three different poses, sketched lightly with a pencil then tone added with a brush and ink with varying levels of water. Four or five layers, I think?? We then used the thinnest part of our twig to ink the outlines
Quite proud of the large one, could have used more tone though I think - it feels way too bright. Actually they all feel a bit bright, but I think this is the biggest offender.

Mik Artistik's Workshop

Mik Artistik's Bags of Fun workshop!
He threw a bag of pens on the floor and made us pick one and write / draw a story about said pen. I picked up a bingo dabber and was like "what on earth can i write about a bingo dabber" but then I remembered that my nan is actually a bit of an angry arse who really loves bingo so I began musing about a really aggressive gran who just throws a bit of a tantrum whenever someone gets a full house before her. From this was born my picture, drawn with the bingo dabber; a grandma shouting wanker. A masterpiece.

Some quick, pretty bad portraits of anthony in the third year. Not pleased, not proud.

This caricature though! I think it captures Anthony pretty well. His hair flicks out a lot.

A comic based on one of Mik's songs - Window Cleaners. If there's a man at your window with a hammer, he's probably a killer. If there's a man at your window with pliers he's probably a robber or a killer and so on so forth
I don't even know. What was going on there really because whatever it was I don't quite know. Why.
Half of this workshop was spent sitting on the floor in a circle listening th Mik play songs on his guitar that he, self-admittedly I might add, could not play. Why we were doing this when we could be actually doing something actually Artistik (haha) I don't have a clue.
also bags of fun is apparently a pun. he draws on bags. i dont know why i didn't see it sooner

Steve is back from last year. There is another page of rotations done in pencil but unfortunately they were too light to be picked up by the camera! Shame, they were pretty good I think. Lots of foreshortening in this lot because Steve was lying on the floor. Think I did a pretty good job! Foreshortening is pretty hard but usually I have enough time to get it right, so considering I did an -ok- job within a short time limit I am pretty proud!
Also decided to use pen for a bit. This was partly because I couldn't really be bothered picking my pencil up off the floor and partly because I thought it would be good practice for making confident lines.
What is up with that one drawing though? I think I added an extra head to his torso, woops.

Our first life drawing session of the semester! We originally had a female model whom of which you can see sketched a few times, however she was a few months pregnant and ended up passing out and then going home, so that was interesting. Perhaps we should make it a frequent thing.
Anyway, we ended up drawing the rest of the class as a cover. Difficult. Feel very rusty, despite drawing frequently over the holidays. Life drawing feels different than normal drawing, just a lot more technical. Might be the time limit.
Hopefully Sarah (I think that was her name) can come back in the future when she's not feeling so pregnant, that'd be nice!

Film Art - The Secret of Kells
The Secret of Kells is an animated film produced in Ireland, France and Belgium. It is set in the 8th century in the Monastery of Kells, following the arrival of the Book of Iona (later known as the Book of Kells) and its subsequent completion by young monk Brendan.
The film is a visual masterpiece in my opinion, with art evoking that of Celtic myth and medieval illumination. Its theme of light versus darkness is consistent throughout and through clever juxtaposition, presents this through both geometry and colour.
Frequently compared to the works of Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, The Secret of Kells uses silence very well without interrupting the discourse. This is, in Japanese, referred to as 'Ma'.
"We have a word for that in Japanese. It’s called ma. Emptiness. It’s there intentionally. [claps his hands] The time in between my clapping is ma. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it’s just busyness. but if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb." - [Roger Ebert's interview with Hayao Miyazaki]
Kells also uses motion graphics to illustrate emotions. For example, when people flip through the Book of Kells, little symbols reminiscent of microscopic life begin to flow over the pages. This ties in with the theme of light versus darkness and pushes it even further into life versus death, backed up by the contrast of the presence of these microscopic images in the realm of Crom Cruach, a pre-Christian Irish demon.
Personally, I feel that the film drags on too much and doesn't quite use ma to the level of expertise that is demonstrated in Miyazaki's films. However, I still believe it is a magnificent film with plenty of atmosphere and brilliant artistic direction.
